Happy Friday everybody:
- The economy added 243,000 jobs in January, bringing unemployment down to 8.3%. Two important takeaways from these numbers: (1) to everyone who argued with me that the last two months were “just holiday temp jobs,” you were wrong; and, (2) to conservatives who downplay the jobs numbers as a product of expanding government jobs, the private sector actually added 257,000 jobs while the public sector shed 14,000.
- Ari Berman from the Nation has a great article on the redistricting process and the GOP’s efforts to functionally resegregate the South.
- Timothy Noah of the New Republic embarks on the same kind of article critic that I argue we need more of in this country, taking on Ann Coulter’s defense of Romneycare, which had been a nominee for “The Dumbest Thing I Heard This Week.”
- Finally, Matt Duss in Salon explains why you should ignore anyone who blames the administration for pulling troops out of Iraq.
