Follow-up On Catholic Health Care Issue

When I wrote yesterday that this firestorm in the media over Catholic Bishops complaining about being required to buy health insurance for their non-Church employees (e.g. Catholic hospital workers) that covers birth control was a story about nothing. It still is, but now Mitt Romney has decided to jump into the fray and say that the President is “now using Obamacare to impose a secular vision on Americans who believe that they should not have their religious freedom taken away.

This seems a little suspect since Mitt Romney already ordered Catholic hospitals to give out Plan B while serving his one term as governor of Massachusetts. Can his campaign survive the perception that he flip-flops?

Moreover, Romney’s Massachusetts was not alone — Think Progress has a great article noting that 28 states already have this rule in place and all the Affordable Care Act did was synchronize the rules nationwide because that kind of synchronization is important for lower costs, but it’s more fun to say this is an unprecedented attack on religion…or something.

What gets me is I don’t even understand how any proposed GOP exemption would work. If you truly think it is a violation of religious freedom to force an employer to provide a policy that covers birth control then there is no justification for stopping at churches — that reasoning justifies all employers choosing to restrict health care coverage based on “beliefs.”
