As opponents of gay marriage convene at Chick-Fil-A restaurants around the nation for today’s Mike Huckabee declared “eat in,” there are a number of alternatives for those of us on the other side of the issue. GLAAD has asked all of us to donate the price of a Chick-Fil-A meal to their organization. There is a planned Friday event where same-sex couples intend to go to Chick-Fil-A restaurants and photograph themselves kissing.
While these options are all well and good, I think we should all eat at McDonald’s. The purpose of the Chick-Fil-A boycott is to use the power of our pocketbooks to encourage corporate change. But this is a two-way street. If we act to induce corporations to change we must reward them when they do.
When several of us stopped buying from organizations involved with ALEC, the “charity” that drafts and then lobbies for legislation to gut regulations, undermine unions, suppress voters and support gun use laws, some ALEC members responded to the pressure. One of which was McDonald’s who publicly stated that they have dumped ALEC.
Economic persuasion works both ways so we should eat at McDonald’s. Drink Coke. And have Kraft Macaroni & Cheese for dinner to reward these companies for responding to our earlier boycott.
