Here Comes The (Misguided Conservative) Story of The Hurricane

One of the most memorable lines from early promotional materials for HBO’s The Newsroom featured Will McAvoy explaining what separates him from other Republicans:

I only seem liberal because I believe that hurricanes are caused by high barometric pressure and not gay marriage.

The line seems over-the-top until you remember that Pat Robertson and other conservatives cited abortion policy as the cause of Hurricane Katrina. For years, conservatives have told us that hurricanes and other natural disasters specifically target the wicked for punishment.

With a hurricane bearing down on the GOP National Convention in Tampa, conservatives have abandoned this interpretation of storms and opted to blame a new culprit — Barack Obama of course.

“The National Hurricane Center is Obama. The National Weather Service is part of the Commerce Department,” he says. “It’s Obama.”

“You know what it is in the media, it’s all about the hurricane hitting next week and they’re not talking about [Vice President Joe] Biden, They are talking about this Hurricane Isaac thing,” Limbaugh continues. “We, who live in south Florida, become experts on it and we don’t need the national hurricane center; we don’t need all these weather dolts analyzing this for us.”
